The efforts of the Ultrafast Optical Communication Group are dedicated to the design, modeling and demonstration of high data rate optical links. This is primarily achieved via a joint optimization of the optical channel, new optical devices, and exploitation of electronic processing and control. Recent efforts include comprehensive modeling of multimode and single mode fiber channels and the creation of opto-electronic receivers and equalizers which mitigate channel impairments. These techniques together with high-speed signal processing strategies allow the deployment of intelligent, robust links. Areas of current interest include:

  • Optical and electronic mitigation of impairments
  • Simplified methods of controlling and detecting phase and amplitude
  • Mitigation of impairments in multimode fiber
  • Hybrid equalization methods optimized for 10Gbps and greater
  • All-optical signal processing in fibers and optical devices
  • Terahertz electronics
  • IEEE standards activities
