Ecma International Meet at GEDC on 60GHz band standard
Atlanta (February 2, 2007) – The Ecma International meeting took steps toward achieving a new international 60 GHz standard, as it reviewed proposals for an air-interface technology that is expected to give rise to a bevy of next-generation wireless applications.

The meeting, held January 30 to February 2 at the Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC) at Georgia Tech, included representatives from ETRI, GEDC, Intel Corp., IBM Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic), Newlans, Philips Semiconductors, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd and Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd.
Ecma's TC32-TG20 task group is developing an international standard for a PHY and a MAC for wireless high-rate short-range communications in the unlicensed 60 GHz band. The standard will provide low-power 2 Gigabit/s to 10 Gigabit/s high-rate point-to-point data transport for bulk data transfer, high-definition multimedia streaming and wireless personal area network (WPAN).
By defining a common framing structure from the start, the standard will ensure compatibility and interoperability for a variety of usage/application scenarios as well as with other organizations and standardization bodies.
Since its inception in 1961, Ecma International has developed standards for information and communication technology (ICT) and consumer electronics (CE). Ecma, based in Switzerland, is a non-profit industry association of technology developers, vendors and users.
Industry and other experts work together at Ecma to complete standards. Ecma submits the approved work for approval as ISO, ISO/IEC and ETSI standards. It is the inventor and main practitioner of “fast tracking” of specifications through the standardization process in global standards bodies such as the ISO.
