GEDC Partners with Georgia Techís Interactive Media Group

GEDC has formed an agreement to partner with the Interactive Media Technology Center (IMTC) at Georgia Tech. IMTC will provide applications aimed at aiding GEDC in its mixed-signal research and development.

"This collaboration will expand our software and middleware capability, thus complementing our established hardware expertise," said Joy Laskar, director of GEDC.

IMTC is a research, design, and education center focusing on technology, education, culture, and medicine. IMTC is located in Technology Square Research Building on the Georgia Tech campus, which also houses GEDCís headquarters.

Ed Price, research director of IMTC, believes the agreement will aid both Georgia Tech centers.

"This partnership will provide IMTC and its partners with access to GEDC's advanced hardware design capabilities," Price said. "It will also expand the base of companies that we help with software research and development."

IMTC was founded in 1989 to demonstrate that multimedia computers could help Atlanta vie successfully to become a host to the Olympic Games. IMTC created two high-tech multimedia "tours" showing what an Atlanta-based Olympics would look like. The demonstrations helped convince the International Olympic Committee to select the city to host the Centennial Games in 1996.

The center has also been active in managing the Aware Home Research Initiative at Georgia Tech. Aware Home is a testbed used by an interdisciplinary research team. It focuses specifically on the issue of how technology can help older people remain in their homes safely rather than moving to a care facility.

IMTCís team of interactive media experts includes computer scientists, electrical engineers, and graphic artists. The center works closely with faculty in a number of other units at Georgia Tech and with numerous other organizations.
